MAP OF GOLDFIELDS
The Goldfields Mining Centre offers 2 tours of the park to enable visitors to gain an appreciation of New Zealand's early gold mining history. All visitors have the opportunity at first hand to see and handle the gold for which the park is famed.
A one-hour fully guided tour of the most accessible sites on the park. The tour starts at the visitor centre and follows a track incorporating sites of ground sluicing, the Chinese village and early mines and tunnels. From vantage points above the park, visitors can gain a full appreciation of the incredible work done by the early miners using water brought on site by miles of water-races in the surrounding hillsides.
The tour finishes at the Goldfields Mine. At the mine site, the stamper battery is operated to show how the mined rocks were crushed to extract gold. The stamper is water-powered, as is the adjacent California sluice gun with its awesome water pressure used to dislodge gold bearing ore.
